Why have a naming ceremony?
A naming ceremony is often a secular celebration for the new arrival. A naming ceremony helps you think about what you would like for your child growing up, and how your family and friends might support and mentor your child.
The ceremony focuses not only on affirming the child’s name, but also what you and their godparents or ‘friends for life’ promise to your child.
Where can you have a naming ceremony?
Naming ceremonies should be child-friendly events in a space where everyone feels comfortable. You can hold it in your house, book a comfortable child-friendly venue, or be outside.
How will I work with you in creating the naming ceremony?
I will write the ceremony with you and deliver it on the day. In creating this ceremony, I will discuss why you chose the child’s name, your hopes and dreams for your child, the promises you and the godparents/friends for life want to make, and help you find the right words.
It is important to make it as inclusive as possible for all ages in terms of length and content. Likewise, ceremonies should be inclusive for everyone to participate and feel welcome whatever their circumstances.
What do I do on the day of the ceremony?
On the day I will arrive at the venue early to check everything is in place. I will lead everyone through the ceremony and provide printouts of the words people want to say.
I make sure that I have allocated plenty of time in case there are any delays during the proceedings. As a mother of three, I understand that babies and children do not always work with the expected schedule!
How much does a naming ceremony cost?
Naming ceremony prices start at £250 for 2024/25, but there may be additional costs associated with my travel depending on where the ceremony is being held.
